RustWatch: A European early-warning system for wheat rust diseases

Access to wheat variety deployment at county, national and European scale through the Wheat Rust Toolbox

Statistics on wheat the deployment of registered varieties over the last decade will be collected at the European scale. These data will be accessible through the Wheat Rust Toolbox, allowing to visualize varieties’ acreages and temporal evolution on maps and graphs.

Analysis of European wheat rust populations in a global context

Population genetic analyses of wheat rust samples of European origin generated in RustWatch The results will be elaborated in a global context via collaboration with partners outside the consortium eg Borlaug Global Rust Initiative

Annual report (2019) and press release about race typing and genotyping of Pst, Pt and Pgt (T1.1)

Annual reports about 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021changes in P. striiformis, P. triticina and P. graminis populations in Europe. The reports will highlight changes of relevance for rust susceptibility of wheat varieties and breeding lines of agronomic importance. The underlying data feeding into the reports will be imported from the online resources in RustWatch, e.g., the WheatRustToolbox

Retrospective analysis of the impact of rust resistance deployment on prevalence of rust races in Europe

Considering yellow rust in France Germany United Kingdom and Denmark as a pilot study information about the deployment of wheat and triticale varieties and Pst resistance specificities will be used to perform a retrospective analysis of the impact of rust resistance deployment on pathogen population dynamics

Aggressiveness and temperature adaptation quantified for selected yellow and Pgt isolates (T1.4)

Assessment of important epidemic drivers ie aggressiveness and influence temperature on growth and multiplication of isolates new rust races in comparison to patterns of key reference isolates

Evaluation of deployment of wheat rust differential lines for improved VCU testing and pathogen monitoring

The procedures for assessment of rust diseases in VCU trials will be updated by improved state-of-the-art methodologies. The usefulness for deployment of Pst wheat differential lines to assist early-warning of new races will be evaluated in collaboration with WP1.

Data available on prevalence of rust fungi on Berberis vulgaris in Europe and implications for IPM in wheat (T1.3, 3.1)

Prevalence of rust fungi on the alternate host based on surveys of Berberis vulgaris Rustinfected leaf samples will be analysed via DNA diagnostic tools for identification of causal species andor genera

RustWatch mobile App for reporting and dissemination of wheat rust disease data. Documentation and user guide

A documentation and user guide will describe the RustWatch mobile Apps for reporting and dissemination of wheat rust disease data. The use of mobile applications aim at increasing the quality and amount of data collected in fields and trials as well as facilitating fast and effective alerts and information of early warning information.

Capacity for sexual reproduction of prevalent races of Pst in Europe identified (T1.3)

Investigation of sexual capacity of present and new races of P. striiformis in Europe will contribute to evaluating the risks of yellow rust sexual reproduction on the alternate host, Berberis vulgaris in Europe.

Web service for exchange of surveillance data between RustWatch and existing surveillance systems in case study regions. Technical note

A technical note will describe web services developed for the automatically exchange of surveillance data between RustWatch and existing surveillance systems in case study regions.

M21- In series of field trials, new IPM strategies will be investigated by using cultivation practices, rust resistant varieties, control thresholds, synthetic fungicides and bio-pesticides. The results will be reported each year after the trials have been completed and appropriate analyses of results have been made, allowing adjustments in recommendations for wheat rust control by end-user farmers.

Web based Trap Nursery Data Management, analysis and display system. Documentation and user guide

A documentation and user guide will be developed for the web based Trap Nursery Data Management, analysis and display system. Output from this system will be used to evaluate results of the VCU trials and as input to the early warnings system.

A documentation and user guide for proper use of the Wheatrust Toolbox will be developed. This will facilitate effective storage, analysis and dissemination of data and information from the project via database driven information systems, web tools and mobile platforms. The WheatRust Toolbox will be the “control centre” of the Wheat Rust early warnig system.

Patterns of distinct Adult Plant Resistance (APR) to Pst in wheat revealed by microscopic histopathology

Key Adult Plant Resistances APR to the three rusts will be characterized at the cellular level through the combination of confocal microscopy multispectral imaging and histological methods The developed protocols will be discussed with breeders in the perspective of highthroughput APR screening

After two years of early detection of susceptible varieties/lines to emerging rust races, the the reliability and interest of the information provided on the varieties by off-season testing will be evaluated by the involved partners.
