Deploying the novel, large-scale Ateknea Air City Monitoring Platform

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - A2CM (Deploying the novel, large-scale Ateknea Air City Monitoring Platform)

Reporting period: 2017-04-01 to 2017-08-31

Air pollution is a major problem for public health. Actually, outdoor air pollution kills 3.3 million people, mostly in cities, every year . That’s more than HIV, malaria and influenza combined. The consequences of the air pollution in urban scenarios are estimated to cost approximately 2% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in developed countries and 5% in developing countries. The problem is only increasing with the unprecedented population growth in cities.
Cities across the world are increasingly adopting smart solutions to achieve better living standards, increased efficiency, economic stability, optimization of energy, and higher environmental protection based on the technologies: IoT, cloud, mobile, and sensors. However, in the Internet of Things (IoT) era there is no a reliable commercial technology that permits understanding and mitigating air pollution in cities. In response to this unquestionable necessity, the novel and European Bettair technology developed by Ateknea has been created to monitor pollution in urban scenarios at an affordable price. The platform permits, for the first time, to map air and noise pollution in cities on a previously unimaginable scale based on a large-scale deployment of outstandingly accurate gas sensors by using an advanced post-processing algorithm. This information allows applying appropriate urban plans for enhancing air quality and to make smart and better decisions to mitigate air pollution.
The feasibility study examines the potential of this concept. The overall purpose of this study is to ensure that our solution can reach the market; hence the study focused on the following specific tasks:
1- Technical validation of the standalone device
2- Customer Validation
3- Definition of large pilots
4- Intellectual Property issues
5- Work Plan & Risk Assessment
6- Business Model & Business Plan
All tasks have been accomplished successfully, both from the technical and business perspective as illustrated in the report. New insights and vital conclusions, detailed in Section Conclusions has been elaborated thanks to the SME Instrument Phase-1, crucial to understand the necessities of our customers, and exploit the technology accordingly.
Cities across the world are increasingly adopting smart solutions to achieve better living standards, increased efficiency, economic stability, optimization of energy, and higher environmental protection based on technologies: IoT, cloud, mobile, and sensors. The smart cities market size is estimated to grow from $312.03 billion in 2015 to $757.74 billion by 2020, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 19.4%. It is obvious that a problem cannot be solved, if you do not know about it. However, astonishingly, in the Internet of Things era there is no a reliable commercial technology that permits understanding and mitigating air pollution in cities. In response to this unquestionable necessity, the European Bettair technology has been created to monitor pollution in urban scenarios at an affordable price.
