Innovative self-controlling biomass gasification technology to improve the biogas efficiency achieving a top quality syngas

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - EFFIGAS (Innovative self-controlling biomass gasification technology to improve the biogas efficiency achieving a top quality syngas)

Reporting period: 2017-05-01 to 2017-08-31

Legno Energia Srl is an Italian company dedicated to the production and supply of electricity and thermal energy for a target market with low power installations. Legno has developed EFFIGAS, a new automatic and efficient biomass gasification technology which transforms organic waste into a top-quality synthesis gas (syngas). This syngas is characterised by a very low tar content and when compressed in a cogeneration unit achieves very high power generation at a high efficiency rates and a very competitive price. This innovative gasification technology will access target sectors such as small heating and electricity networks, mainly rural areas where the vast biomass resource can be exploited and where they can make up for the absence of grid electricity supply
EFFIGAS is at a technology readiness level (TRL) 7 stage of development. The overall aim of the project is to take the technology to TRL9 and to market launch our solution in compliance with relevant EU Directives (i.e. Directive (EU) 2015/2193; EcoDesign Directive 2009/125/EC).
In this feasibility study we have analyzed the implementation of our new system EFFIGAS. We have carried out research and analyses concerning various fields: 1) Technical analysis and plan; 2) Commercial Plan and FTO analysis; and 3) Financial analysis and plan.
Among the objectives achieved we can highlight: analysis of our current prototype that proves the effiency of our system and provides the knowledge of the required future improvements, a deeper knowledge of the market needs and the competitors within it; the potential of our EFFIGAS system (both technical and commercial); the business plan to be followed to reach the market in the next 24 months.
EFFIGAS will save approximately 27.51 tons of CO2 to the environment during the first 5 years in the market. Therefore, EFFIGAS, contributes to achieve the European 2020-targets related to the increase of energy consumption produced from renewable sources, the improvement in the EU’s energy efficiency and the reduction in EU greenhouse gas emissions. It also boosts transition towards a Circular Economy as it is framed in the Waste to Energy sector, encouraging global competitiveness, sustainable economic growth and generation of new jobs.
