Feasibility Study for employing the uniquely powerful ESS linear accelerator to generate an intense neutrino beam for leptonic CP violation discovery and measurement.

Deliverables

Physics Performance according to initial parameters. (opens in new window)

The Physics Performance according to initial parameters will be calculated and used as reference for the coming improvements.

Accumulator operation scheme (opens in new window)

The accumulator operation scheme will be defined. The layout and optics and injection from the linac to the accumulator, including space charge and beam dynamics, will be studied.

Mine evaluation for the far detector. (opens in new window)

A first mine evaluation for the far detector will be performed taking account the size of the detector and geology.

H- source design, integration into ESS and RF upgrade studies. (opens in new window)

First H- source design, integration into ESS present facility (optics and hardware) and RF upgrade studies to comply with the facility proposed upgrades.

Physics Performance after first optimizations (opens in new window)

The Physics Performance of the facility will be evaluated after the first optimizations and a recommendation for the baseline will be made accordingly.

Evaluation of an alternative hadron collector (opens in new window)

Evaluation of an alternative hadron collector consisting of a superconducting continuous-current solenoid combined with a dipole magnet.

Requirements for the linac. (opens in new window)

A list of the requirements for the necessary linac modifications will be established.

Performance, cost and safety evaluation of the facility. (opens in new window)

The physics performance the cost and safety evaluation of the facility will be provided according to the baseline parameters fixed during the Design Study

Transfer lines layout and design, extraction and switchyard design (opens in new window)

The transfer lines layout and design will be performed , including the extraction and switchyard. The Beam losses and activation will also be evaluated for this design.

Design of the target station (opens in new window)

The design of the target station including the decay tunnel and the beam dump will be provided

Beam losses and activation (opens in new window)

The Beam losses and activation will be evaluated. The simulated performance for protons and H-, beam chopping and HOMs will also be extracted.

Initial facility parameters. (opens in new window)

Common to all working groups Initial facility parameters will be established in order to avoid diverging by using different options. The initial baseline parameters will be updated each time it is proved that new values of these parameters would increase the performance of the facility.

Design of the near detector (opens in new window)

The design of the near detector will be provided including the layout of its installation and the physics performance.

Near detector requirements. (opens in new window)

The Near detector requirements (beam monitoring, crsoss-section measurements,...) will be clearly established before proceeding to the design of this detector.

Optimized design of the magnetic horn (opens in new window)

An optimized design of the magnetic horn will be provided, considering requirements from the pulse generator taking into the beam frequency defined by the other WG.

Physics Performance and comparison with other proposals (opens in new window)

After a second optimization, the facility Physics Performance will be re-evaluated. A comparison with other proposals will also be performed.

The design of the far detector and its performance evaluation will be provided according to the choice of detection technic and size of the detector

The conceptual design of the current pulse generator in the already defined conditions and of the horn cooling system, will be provided.
