Objectif
The International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) of Marine Microbiology in Bremen, Germany was founded in 2002 through an initiative of the Max Planck Society as a high profile, international graduate school with a clearly defined identity, a world-class teaching and research program. The Max Planck Research School of Marine Microbiology (MarMic) involves 4 research institutes in or near Bremen with departments at the forefront of research in marine microbiology: the Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, the University of Bremen, the International University of Bremen, and the Alfred Wegener Institute of Polar and Marine Research.
The students are trained in different but interlinking disciplines within the field of marine microbiology, such as biogeochemistry, physiology, ecology, genetics, and evolution. MarMic is interdisciplinary and synergistic, with an elite structured research training program, providing students with PhD projects of an exceptionally high scientific quality.
The students are accompanied during their studies by a thesis committee that is responsible for the supervision and success of their research, and ensures that the students gain their PhD in 3 years, learn diverse scientific techniques as well as soft skills and follow a personalized career development plan. We would now like to extend the European dimension of our school by establishing 8 full host fellowships plus 10 guest PhD fellows for 3 months for a Marie Curie Early Stage Research Training in marine microbiology.
The training of these early-stage researchers at an internationally recognized centre for marine microbiology will encourage them to pursue a career in science and strengthen the European Research Area. The proposed EST will create a network of research relationships, which links marine sciences within Europe and to the world.
