New chemical building blocks for de-icing and anti-icing of car windows

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - PRicelessCOAT (New chemical building blocks for de-icing and anti-icing of car windows)

Reporting period: 2018-01-01 to 2019-10-31

Ice accretion of car windshields is a road safety concern in fall and wintertime as frost impairs the vision of drivers which causes serious road accidents. Windshield washer fluids are crucially important for rapid car windshield de-icing and most efficient through a combination of thermal, mechanical, and chemical action; i.e. local heating, scraping, and the application of appropriate windshield washer fluids. At present, windshield washer fluids rely solely on colligative antifreezes, like ethanol and monoethyleneglycol. Mimics of antifreeze proteins which act as non-colligative antifreezes have been developed in PRicelessCOAT for use as additives in screenwash formulations aiming to further reduce ice accretion of car windshields.
