Periodic Reporting for period 1 - ECO-RIVEST (An innovative ECO inteRnal coverIng for metal and plastic conVEntionalS conTainers)

Período documentado: 2017-08-01 hasta 2017-11-30

The disposal of used paint and coatings containers containing unused paint present a considerable burden to a sustainable waste management. Paint containers, usually made of plastic or metal, are fully recyclable, but the unused paint remaining makes no possible its recycling without a previous treatment. For this reason, most paint containers end up either landfilled, incinerated or disposed of as hazardous waste at a higher cost and additional stress for the environment. This leads to an unnecessarily large amount of used paint containers (≈90%) considered as special waste which prevents them to be recycled.
Consequently, there is an urgent need to minimize the waste generated by disposed empty paint containers. Eco-Rivest consists of an internal cover (a plastic bag) which decreases the environmental impact of paint packaging by increasing the amount of recycled material up to 88% of the total container weight. The removal of the inner bag provides a clean outer container able to be recycled or re-used as it is.
The main objective of Eco-Rivest project phase 2 will be to plan and achieve the industrialization of the container covering to allow its commercialization in Europe.
Defined the design, functionality and performance requirements of the Eco-Rivest technology as well as the best materials to optimize the covering. Established the timing, effort and specific activities for the technical optimization and to scale up and industrialize our technology. Deep market study to set the business margins, competitors and market strategy in Europe and evaluated risks. Defined our commercial and exploitation strategy to set successful agreements with early adopters and clients. FTO analysis and patent strategy. Growth forecast including the cost analysis of Eco-Rivest solution. Total investment required to bring the solution to the market and reviewed the global business plan.
Eco-Rivest is able to reduce up to 88% the waste generated by empty paint container preventing them to be landfilled or incinerated and allowing their recycling or re-use with the consequent reduction in the environmental impact. The lower amount of waste generated, the highest compared with competitors, has a lower management cost associated as hazardous waste decreasing end-users investment. Eco-Rivest will contribute to the European objectives of reducing the packaging waste production and increasing the share of municipal waste for reuse and recycling.
