Demonstration of the Next Generation Wave Energy Device – POWERMODULE

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - PowerModule (Demonstration of the Next Generation Wave Energy Device – POWERMODULE)

Reporting period: 2018-10-01 to 2019-09-30

PowerModule project was set to commercialize the further developed Penguin PTO (Power Take Off) system together with pilot customer with whom the demonstrator is developed ready to market. PowerModule is a stand alone device which converts the wave movement into electricity. Structure is compact and scalable and offers power for remote areas and applications.
The objective of this project was to demonstrate Wello´s PowerModule technology in small-, mid-, and full-scale, and in a commercial vessel. Small-scale and mid-scale PowerModules were developed, manufactured in Finland and tested at Gulf of Finland. Testing of small-scale was done in tank. The Mid-scale PowerModule was installed on 10 meters long vessel for autonomous operation.

The performance of PowerModule technology is extremely promising when it is implemented on an asymmetric Penguin hull. Tests showed a 30% increase in energy yield. Power Module technology lowers material costs, and as a result, improved performance will have big effect on decreasing LCOE. Project ended with partially successful results in terms of technology validation. However the market readiness was not yet achieved but work continues in other context.
PowerModule is a compact stand-alone power generation system which is expected to revolutionize the off shore power production in remote applications. Applications are expected to be continuous type processes.
