Lyotropic liquid crystal properties of Polycatenar Mesogens

Objetivo

The proposal will bring to the EU a most talented Russian researcher with a unique training in the solvent-induced (lyotropic) properties of liquid crystals. The proposed study has its origins in an initial visit made by the applicant to the Exeter group w here she established, for the first time, lyotropic liquid crystal properties of polycatenar materials in non-aqueous solvents. The programme will address a detailed understanding of the factors that control and influence this behavior, initially using a series of polycatenar silver complexes whose thermotropic properties are well documented. The aim is to control the phase behaviour predictively. It is then proposed to study representative examples of other polycatenar liquid crystals and to apply the kno wledge gained in the first part of the proposal to the control of their lyotropic organisation. It is planned that the work carried out under this programme will form the basis for an ongoing collaboration between applicant and host once the fellowship is ended as the expertise of the two partners is highly complementary. The research area is highly topical as liquid crystals represent an area of real strength within the EU, and the relationship that liquid crystal systems can play in the realization of the rge supra-molecular structures which may mimic biological constructs or may have applications in areas such as photonics, is emerging from EU-led science.
