The project goal was to explore possibilities of pumping nanoscale organic lasers and condensates in ways that are feasible for practical applications. So far, most studies report pumping with a sizable, expensive laser. In this project, we first investigated the possibilities of pumping a plasmonic nanoparticle array Bose-Einstein condensate, which is a new type of nanoscale coherent light source, with LEDs (light emitting diodes). The orders of magnitude needed in improving the system in order to achieve this were determined. Then, we explored the possibilities of electrical pumping of microcavity polariton lasers and condensates. This research led to a discovery of a new type of white LED. It utilizes the Bragg modes of a layered material stack to out-couple the colours required for white. Only a single emitter material is needed in this configuration, which offers a significant advantage over previous organic white LED concepts. White LEDs are used, for instance, for energy efficient lighting applications, and organic materials offer possibilities for reduced cost and environmentally friendly processes. The results have been published, and a patent application has been filed.
