From discovery to scale up of cluster based electrolytes for Ultra-high energy storage flow batteries

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - ELECTRO-POM (From discovery to scale up of cluster based electrolytes for Ultra-high energy storage flow batteries)

Reporting period: 2018-03-01 to 2019-08-31

Redox flow batteries are an energy storage system suitable for grid level energy storage. The main limitation of the current technology is a relatively low energy density compared to other energy storage technologies. We have taken significant steps towards solving this by the use a unique metal oxide as the energy storage medium. This metal oxide allows storage of up to 10 times the energy of the current vanadium flow batteries. This has been demonstrated in a small-scale prototype flow battery. Progress is being made towards commercialisation of this metal oxide and challenges remain in the large-scale preparation of the oxide and the fabrication of the battery system.
