Development of cloud based Mission Control System for satellite missions

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - SPACEIT-MCS (Development of cloud based Mission Control System for satellite missions)

Période du rapport: 2017-12-01 au 2018-05-31

Spaceit is an innovative spacetech company who provides a unique software as a service solution for satellite mission control. Spaceit fills the market gap by providing all of four main services that mission operators need for successful mission: mission control system (cloud-based), worldwide network of ground stations, satellite control service and 24/7 support. Currently, there is a limited number of mission control system solutions available for small satellite missions, therefore vast majority of missions build their own tailor-made mission control software which is expensive and unreliable. Custom-made mission control systems can amount up to 50% of the entire satellite mission budget. Compared to one-off solutions, Spaceit cuts mission operator’s costs on software three times, provides higher reliability and performance through continuous testing and system development, better communication through a wide network of ground stations and therefore enables mission operators to focus on their scientific and/or business goals.
The H2020 SME Phase 1 project has enabled Spaceit to continue the development work of its solution. During the project the feasibility study was conducted, where four main tasks were implemented: enhance market validation, enhance technical reliability and performance of the solution, IPR strategy development, business and action plan development.
As a result of the H2020 Phase 1 project Spaceit has initiated cooperation with satellite operators and ground stations. Furthermore, Spaceit has the first paying customer (Tallinn University of Technology). Participation in conferences and trade fairs have helped to raise awareness about Spaceit and resulted in contracting first Memorandums of Understanding with LeafSpace (Italy), Goonhilly Earth Station (UK), RBC Signals (US) and Infostellar (Japan).
Spaceit’s solution decreases mission operator’s costs on software up to three times and the overall satellite mission budget up to 40%. Hence launching satellite missions becomes more affordable to a wider number of operators which increases the quantity of satellite missions. Furthermore, Spaceit contributes to data analysizing, efficient learning and exchange of know-how between different missions resulting in higher reliability and risk tolerance.
