INCREASING OF THE COMMERCIAL COMPETITIVITY OF THE ORNAMENTAL HORTICULTURE BY THE DIVERSIFICATION AND THE INCREASE OF THE QUALITY

Objetivo

The aim of the project was to develop production systems for new cut flowers and foliage plants of a number of species, with investigation of their particular requirements. Delphinium lines were selected for multipurpose use as garden plants, cut flowers and seed production in both Dutch and Mediterranean climates. For Aster, the influence of photoperiod was studied and the specific needs of 12 new varieties ascertained six species of Limonium were studied, 2 for quality, 2, for new colours and 2 as parents for the colour yellow. The genus Chamaelausium was successfully propagated in vitro and true to type new varieties were obtained. Factors influencing branching and flowering were studied. For Proteaceae, nutrient solutions were adapted to suit a large number of species and cultivars.
Ornamental horticulture, mainly in cutflower and foliage sectors, requires continuous innovation to stay competitive and to give a sufficient return to the growers. This innovation can be by means of diversification in terms of species (new species production) or in terms of varieties (cultivar breeding). The introduction of these new crops in commercial production supposes that all problems of production have been solves, like : multiplication, substrates, nutrition, growth and flowering physiology, pathology, yield, vase life and so on.

The project concerns problems of diversification and focuses on :

- new varieties of Delphinium for cutflower crops under glass in Dutch and Mediterranean climates (breeding, vegetative and "in vitro" propagation, productivity in glasshouse or in the open air in the Netherlands and Italy);
- new Dutch cultivars of Aster (photoperiodic factors affecting growth and flowering, cuttings, "in vitro" propagation, production time sharing along the year among the Netherlands, Italy and Sicily);
- new species of Limonium (assessment of the possibilities to produce them under glass or in the open air, in open field or in soil-less conditions in the Netherlands, south of France and Italy);
- possibilities to grow Proteaceae in Mediterranean areas (climatic and nutritional requirements, architectural construction, flowering physiology, "in vitro" propagation);
- use of Wax Flower as flowered branch (flowering induction, architectural construction, cuttings and in vitro propagation);
- four new species for foliage (setting up cropping systems).
