STRUCTURATION OF THE VARIABILITY, MAIZE BREEDING FOR INDUSTRIAL USE AND ADAPTED TO MEDITERRANEAN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES

Objetivo

The object of the project was to provide maize breeders with material adapted to the climates of European Mediterranean countries to be used to create varieties for industrial utilisation.
In a multilocale net experimental hybrids from different genetic make up, have been evaluated for thei ability to produce large size semolina and for their agronimic traits. The best results were obtained fronm flint inbred lines crossed with distant material such as Stiff Stalk, Lancaster or Argentine Europe inbred lines. Results of some late maturing commercial hybrids were good, but imported Argentinean hybrids showed very poor adaptation. Foe amylopectin production, waxy experimental hybrids were evaluated in the same conditions but have never been sufficiently productive in comparison with waxy commercial hybrids.
For holminy production, a new variability has been searched by the study of 84 landracesand 25 inbred lines selected for their flint orange kernal. Selection on per se value in four locations allowed to retain their best adapted 28 populations and 15 inbred lines to be submitted for further analysis.
