Objective
Emissions of aerial pollutants within livestock buildings may not only impair animal and human health but may also harm the rural environment. The major aerial pollutants are organic dusts, gaseous ammonia and micro-organisms, which are responsible for disease spread, noxious odours and rural pollution.
The objectives of this proposal are to reduce pollutant emissions and improve animal and human health by identifying those systems of livestock husbandry with the lowest emissions.

The major aerial pollutants are organic dusts, gaseous ammonia and micro-organisms, which are responsible for disease spread, noxious odours and rural pollution. Research is underway to reduce pollutant emissions and improve animal and human health by identifying those systems of livestock husbandry with the lowest emissions.
Sampling methods have been investigated for a field survey of aerial pollutants in livestock buildings. Methods have been developed for measuring concentrations of airborne dust, micro-organisms and ammonia, ventilation rate and meteorological variables. Some novel techniques have been devised and initial tests undertaken. A specification has been formulated for a mathematical model of pollutant dynamics.
Field measurements of pollutant emission in four European countries will be undertaken simultaneously on a total of 392 livestock farms using standardized techniques. In addition, mathematical models of pollutant emission within and from livestock buildings will be devised and valudated experimentally using scale and full size buildings.
