Periodic Reporting for period 2 - REG GAM 2018 (Regional Aircraft)

Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

The REG objective is to bring the integration of technologies for Regional Aircraft to a further level of complexity with respect to the achievements of CS GRA. Retaining GRA outcomes, advanced technologies for regional aircraft are being further developed and will be integrated and validated at aircraft level, drastically de-risk their integration on future regional aircraft products:
LDO Conventional Turboprop Aircraft Configuration
LDO Innovative Aircraft Configuration
Airbus D&S Multimission Aircraft.
Main high-level objectives are:
Design loops completion through preliminary a/c design activities for both the investigated Aircraft configurations and delivery of ASMs to TE
Detailed design phase for all Demonstrators, with achievement of CDRs for Iron Bird, Fuselage structural Demonstrator and FTB2
Manufacturing of components for the demonstrators
Qualification of items for ground tests and for safety of flight
Deliver of inputs to ECO TA for LCA evaluations.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

REG achieved important results in 18-19:
The second design loop was completed, and the Aircraft Simulation Models delivered to the Technology Evaluator for the TP90pax (regional aircraft with turboprop engines installed under the wing) and for the innovative TP130 pax aircraft concept (regional aircraft with turboprop engines installed in the rear fuselage).
The third design loop started for the TP90pax regional aircraft, whereas in agreement with CSJU activities related to TP130pax studies were frozen to give priority to new activities in 2019 on studies related to hybrid-electrical regional aircraft configurations.
The activities related to the Future Regional Multi-Mission configurations achieved very good progress delivering to the TE model inputs at emissions and noise levels.

The technologies maturation activities made good progress:
Preliminary Design and Critical Design Reviews held for the Adaptive Wing innovative technologies (Adaptive Winglet, Morphing Flap, Droop Nose, Innovative Wing Tip and Load Control & Alleviation System). Eco design activities progressed with good achievements for innovative surface treatments as well as for Liquid Resin Infusion composite technology for the innovative composite wing structure, both agreed with ECO TA; first sets of Life Cycle Inventory data delivered by REG to ECO TA, as planned.
For the Integrated Vehicle Health Management, a first software version released.
For the on-board innovative systems: the technical specification for the innovative wing ice protection system was issued; the Electrical Landing Gear CDR was closed; the Advanced Environmental Control System hybrid architecture was chosen upon completion of detailed trade-off and technological bricks selected; the innovative propeller PDR was held.
Flight Control System actuation activities progressed for Electro-Mechanical Actuators: PDR and CDR for Winglet/Wingtip Actuation successfully performed.
The design and manufacturing of full-scale demonstrators achieved substantial progress. The detailed design phase was completed including PDR and CDR successfully held for the FTB2, for the Iron Bird, for the Fuselage Structural Demonstrator and the Outer Wing Box on-ground demonstrator. The design of the experimental modifications for the FTB1 demo aircraft achieved good progress achieving the PDR and progressing with the design toward the CDR.
The manufacturing and assembly of full-scale demonstrators started as detailed:
FTB2 components made available by relevant Core Partners and assembled on the wing of the demonstration aircraft;
The Skeleton of the Iron Bird was manufactured, and the manufacturing progressed well for other components for this demonstrator;
Pre-production verification panels built for the fuselage structural demonstrator as well as for the Outer Wing Box on-ground demonstrator.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

"Important progress has been achieved towards the environmental goals for the Green Conceptual Regional Aircraft Configurations (Advanced Turboprop 90pax, Innovative Turboprop 130pax, Multimission Turboprop 70pax).
The technology maturation reached enables to proceed with detailed design of solutions and manufacturing starting for components that will be integrated in the REG Full-scale Demonstrators: Adaptive Wing Integrated (FTB#1 flying demonstrator & OWB ground demonstrator), Integrated Technologies Demonstrator (FTB#2 flying demonstrator) and Fuselage/Pax Cabin Integrated Demonstrator
Impacts are expected from outcomes of the Green Conceptual Regional Aircraft Configuration activities and from validation of innovative technologies through the above full-scale demonstrations: Greening (CO2 and Noise reduction), Industrial leadership (development costs and time-schedule reduction for future regional aircraft programs, contributing to EU Manufacturer leadership with market share increase and job creation) and enhanced Mobility (fuel efficiency, transport cost reduction, operation in short runways)
Completion of Loop 2 activities in 18-19 substantiated that High Level Objectives for the REG green conceptual aircraft can be achieved in terms of pollution and noise reduction:
Advanced TP, 90 pax (targets are w.r.t. ATR 72, in-service during 2014, scaled to 90 Pax.)
CO2 reduction: 35 / 40% , NOx reduction: >50% , Noise reduction: 60 / 70%
Innovative TP, 130 pax (targets w.r.t. Regional Jet in-service in 2014)
CO2 reduction: 19 / 25% , NOx reduction: 19 / 25% , Noise reduction: 20 / 30%
Multimission TP, 70 pax (targets are w.r.t. 2014 Airbus DS Multi-mission aircraft
CO2 reduction: 20 / 30%, NOx reduction: 20 / 30% , Noise reduction: 20 / 30%
New activities started on hybrid-electrical regional aircraft configurations aim to assess the potential of the application of electric hybrid technology belonging to regional class aircraft, identify the most promising aircraft configurations and detect the main technological gaps.
In commercial aviation, the regional aircraft market continues to be a key growth sector of the airline industry and contributes to efficient air transport system, ensuring safe and seamless mobility, creating new jobs and respecting the environment towards a European carbon neutrality deal."
