Augmented Reality Assisted System for Utilities Infrastructure Management

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - AIM (Augmented Reality Assisted System for Utilities Infrastructure Management)

Reporting period: 2018-03-01 to 2018-08-31

The installation, upgrade and operational maintenance of utility infrastructures protection is a global challenge which is continuously growing. The Augmented Reality Assisted System for Utilities Infrastructure Management(AIM) is a system designed to support utility field workers. The AIM platform integrates different technologies such as: positioning and sensors(GNSS), Augmented Reality(AR), Geographical Information Systems(GIS) and 3D databases. In practise, this system will guide the field workers in underground and building utilities to ‘see’ what is happening under the ground, floor and behind the walls, like an “x-ray image” of the infrastructure.

The system is using AR interfaces to render the complex 3D models of the utilities infrastructure such as water, gas, electricity and communications. in an approach that is easily understandable and useful during field work.

AIM will provide better, more streamlined on-site utility management; maximize existing investments; reduce operation and management costs; reduce accidents and improve working conditions.

AIM’s target customers are all organizations involved in the utilities management sector.

This project goal was to develop a technical and commercial feasibility assessment as a milestone step towards the creation of the AIM’s line of products and services and it’s worldwide commercialization.

The objectives of this feasibility assessment were to define market niches, consumer needs, evaluate relevant legislation aspects, identify and solve market barriers, determine the AIM’s technical feasibility, as well the economic and social impact of it’s commercialization.
This feasibility study allowed Cyblix to gather relevant knowledge about the AIM’s market and to establish a roadmap of the future steps to take towards the AIM’s commercialization.

During the course of the feasibility study the following tasks were performed:
- Commercial Market analysis
- Risk Assessment and Management Analysis
- Technical feasibility Analysis
- Commercial and Economical Feasibility Analysis
- Legal and IPR Assessment and Management Analysis
- Business Plan Development

This feasibility study allowed Cyblix to have a better assessment of the potential synergies between Cyblix and external partners, which are key for a successful product launch and commercialization phase.

Based on the findings of the Feasibility Study, our company has decided to continue with the project.

The general objectives, concept, approach and impact haven’t suffered relevant changes.

It was confirmed the AIM’s high commercial potential.
The project will create a return on investment of 324% within 6 years of commercialization, grow the company sustainability and generate the conditions to hire 60+ staff.

Most importantly it will contribute to improve the European utility infrastructure management while simultaneously reducing it’s financial and societal costs.

The AIM's development is aligned with the EU Sustainable Development Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialization and foster innovation. The Cyblix AIM’s can support this by improving management and optimization of infrastructure and fostering innovation and increased productivity and efficiency.
