TrueTalent - Creating the new artist economy

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - TrueTalent (TrueTalent - Creating the new artist economy)

Período documentado: 2018-03-01 hasta 2018-11-30

The TrueTalent project adresses the difficulty for artists in the performing arts (focusing on opera) in developing their career in a supported and structured manner, while providing artist managers and artistic staff with good support for their decision making. Today all parties lack insight in the market due to a lack of information and thus decisions can sometimes be arbitrary to the detriment of both artists, artist managers and artistic decision makers alike.

Every year large amounts are spent on education of classical musicians and opera artists and arts organization spend large sums on producing and developing the opera tradition which is real European heritage. Due to these issues, the above mentioned stakeholders in the opera world sometimes have to live with the fact that they cannot get the maximum potential from their training as artists or artistic decision makers due to inefficiencies in the market. It is important to get the most effective dissemination of opera to European citizens and the communities opera companies serve and that the ecosystem can work efficiently and not waste resources.

The TrueTalent project aims at developing mechanisms for understanding artist careers and mapping them with the needs of arts organizations and artist managers in order to make a better matching to the benefit of all parties. It aims at extracting tacit knowledge lying hidden in the artist community to provide tools for faster and more precise decision making by all stakeholders and provide fair and equal opportunity for all artists.
The project has included surveys and prototype testing and interviews with artists, voice coaches and artistic staff from all over Europe (ca. 400 people).

We have analyzed how stakeholders form an opinion about traits that describe an artist, when bias comes into play and how we can use these data to gather reliable data about artists.

For the latter, we have designed methods to gather the data and analyzed how our business model is influenced by these new sources of insight.

The project has also generated new emerging business models where e.g. data-driven career advice for artists can show to be a valuable tool for artists to ensure longer and more sustainable careers.
In case the proposed project is carried out we project significant improvements for all stakeholders in the artistic side of the performing arts world. Also the audience, the raison d'être for any performing art form.

It will make the performing arts more sustainable, make artists more independent and feel more empowered, help artist managers develop new business models and not least, help artistic decision makers protect, develop and challenge the opera art form to secure it many more years of thriving.

It will furthermore help to modernize certain parts of the artistic process attracting a more diverse group of people to it, thus in the end making opera and performing arts even more diverse and reflecting of society.
