Touch and pressure sensitive material without electronic sensors for intuitive and eye-free control of a car’s features while driving

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - Tangi0 (Touch and pressure sensitive material without electronic sensors for intuitive and eye-free control of a car’s features while driving)

Reporting period: 2018-01-01 to 2018-04-30

Most European countries have banned the use of mobile phones while driving as they have been proven to cause the driver to become distracted and thus cause a large volume of crashes (using a mobile phone while driving make you 4 times more likely to crash ). The EC have also been aiming at reducing mobile phone usage while driving , due to studies showing the effects can be very similar to high blood alcohol levels – 30% and 50% slower reaction times respectively .Annual road deaths in the EU have been much higher (25,500) than the desired 20,000 target for 2020, with a change of only 500 within the last 4 years . At TG0, we have designed a product that can be used without taking the driver’s attention and eyes from the road ahead. As a result,TG0 will help contribute to the EC’s goals of reducing the number of road deaths in Europe, and meet its targets.
Both technical and economic viability were confirmed and suggested to progress the project forward and apply for the Phase 2 of the SME instrument. This includes findings such as:
- Technical steps to complete the product development have been identified. Milestones and steps to achieve a successful Ph2 have been set up.
- To ensure our product-market fit, we have identified supplier partners and OEM customers whom we will actively involve from the beginning first stage of the project.
- Commercial agreements have been signed and secured, including licensing agreement with supplier partner, PoC contracts with OEMs and A European tooling/injection moulding subcontractor has been contracted for the manufacturing of the trial tooling and sourcing of the raw materials.
- Timing and involved party has been confirmed for a pilot trial: we will use early production prototypes and leverage OEM partner.
- The business model and financials projections were validated after conversations with perspective clients and by preparing the financial projection with realistic assumptions.
We sell our technology through direct dealings and conversations with European automotive OEMs. We have already received universally positive international feedback and potential customers are waiting for the pilot project in the UK to be completed. On the back of successful trials, deals will be made to introduce the products into a selected car model, and then progress further into a wider range of models with different features and prices present in each. After successful commercialisation in Europe, we aim to introduce our product to the North American and Asian-Pacific markets, with further expansions to all global markets following this. Our ambition is to have purchase orders from 9 OEMs globally, such that we will have installed 2 million units in 30 different car models by the end of 2022.
