Smart Photovoltaic Façades for Self-Powered Buildings

Periodic Reporting for period 1 - PowerBrise (Smart Photovoltaic Façades for Self-Powered Buildings)

Reporting period: 2018-03-01 to 2018-06-30

Reducing building energy consumption is a key goal of the EU to achieve a sustainable and competitive low-carbon economy. Several EU regulations promote the application of energy efficient measures and renewable sources in existing and new constructed buildings. Within this context, Synthesis have developed PowerBrise, an innovative photovoltaic (PV) brise-soleil. The uniqueness of PowerBrise includes special design features and smart automatic motorization integrated to Building Automation System (BAS).
PowerBrise development has currently reached TRL6. To ensure a successful market launch on TRL9, the completion of Phase 1 aims to define: (i) technical objectives, like optimising motors, mobile parts and integration to BAS, field testing and industrialization assessment, (ii) commercial objectives including market forecasts, FTO analysis and risk assessment, and (iii) financial objectives such as costs revision and income/profit estimations.
Technical upgrades have been defined and scheduled. The commercialization strategy has been confirmed based on the huge stock of potential users, the PV and BAS upward market trends, and the absence of both direct competitors and conflicts with IPR. Considering costs revision and business plan, a final price was determined. Its deployment in international markets will allow the exploitation of a business opportunity with cumulative revenues of 24.5M€ and a ROI of 4.08.
Based on these results, we are totally convinced about the feasibility of PowerBrise project and have decided to continue with its further development.
The installation of PowerBrise in future smart cities will increase overall buildings energy efficiency. It will also reduce building energy costs, making the technology amenable to building´s managers intending to improve their business competitiveness. By enhancing the performance of PV energy in buildings, PowerBrise will contribute to strengthen the energetic self-sufficiency of the EU. Such diversification will be translated into more cost-effective and environmental friendly energy sources, which have a major impact on the EU society. Furthermore, PowerBrise technology is perfectly scalable and easy to extend in international markets, thus strengthening the EU renewable energy industry.
