Exploring the dynamics and causes of prehistoric land use change in the cradle of European farming

Project description

Prehistoric adaptation strategies to environmental changes

Natural lake sediments and submerged prehistoric settlements in lakes of todays Albania, Greece and North Macedonia offer the opportunity to investigate the environmental and societal change in the dawn of European farming, 8 000 years ago. The EU-funded EXPLO project proposes an innovative interdisciplinary method to investigate interfaces between past human ways of life, land use and the environment. The project will use a unique combination of archaeological, biological and dynamic mathematical (Bayseian) modelling methods applied to dendrochronology and radiocarbon dating to establish highly precise settlement chronologies. EXPLO will combine on-site information from excavations with off-site palaeoenvironmental data to detect past adaptation strategies.
