Excellency Network Building for Comprehensive Research and Assessment of Geofluids

Periodic Reporting for period 2 - ENeRAG (Excellency Network Building for Comprehensive Research and Assessment of Geofluids)

Período documentado: 2020-01-01 hasta 2022-03-31

Research and innovation on geological resources have treated geofluids as individual separate entities both in national and European legislation. Neglecting these interrelationships led to misinterpretation of processes and sub-optimal use of geological resources. These environmental issues caused significant economic and ecological losses. The ENeRAG overcame these shortcomings with the proposed Dynamic System Approach for a detailed understanding of the connections between geofluids and their hosting formations. ENeRAG contributed to improving the knowledge transfer among different fields and sustainable utilisation of geofluids. Due to the project, the research profile and excellence of ELTE have been raised through cooperation with UMIL and GTK in the fields of comprehensive understanding, tracing, and modelling geofluid systems. The project has enhanced the S&T and innovation capacity in sustainable development and eco-friendly exploitation of geofluids and their resources. In the frame of the project, the developed workflow and guidelines could strengthen the hands-on experience in geofluid research, legislation and exploitation. It can provide missing novelty services and give the base for prioritising geofluid-related resources. ENeRAG improved stakeholder experience and legislation and contributed to the dissemination of knowledge. In addition, ELTE, with its first consortium leadership in H2020 projects, improved its innovative capability to gain national and international EU funding thanks to intensified network building and widened cooperation.
The ELTE, as the consortium leader has successfully implemented and operated ENeRAG in its international project management system. ENeRAG has raised the research and innovation profile of ELTE by capacity enhancement with the accomplishment of 6 training workshops, 1 summer and 1 winter school. ENeRAG has ensured to fill networking gaps of the developed partner, through the interaction between partners and by transfer of knowledge through 8 junior researcher exchanges and 7 session organization on international conferences. ENeRAG implemented a platform for early-career scientists by the organization of the Hungarian and international round of the Problem solver competition and active contribution to 3 Researchers’ Night Events. ENeRAG has spread the project results efficiently since its start to the scientific target sector in 11 international conferences via 73 approved abstracts, through 21 open-access peer-reviewed publications. The project reached the end-users through the organization of 2 stakeholder conferences and through the International Geofluids Symposium.
The organized workshops attracted almost 500 participants from all over the world. In the frame of the project 32 BSc, MSc; 5 student research; 4 PhD and 1 DSc theses, 3 habilitations were supported and completed, 5 new collaborations were formed. The short-time secondments helped 57 researchers and students in expanding their knowledge. The completed long-term institutional researcher exchange helped to formulate joint research papers. ENeRAG improved the capability of ELTE to coordinate and compete for national, EU and internationally competitive research funding and helped to submit 7 research proposals in the field of geofluid research.
The consortium partners held presentations at six national and 11 international conferences. The Workflow for integrated geofluid research was proposed, and for its application, we prepared a Guideline together with the stakeholders. The results of ENeRAG were transferred continuously toward society via social media (Facebook 69 914, Instagram 18 123, Blogs 19 779, website 4000 estimated users). In the project, the 7 newsletters displayed the ENeRAG related issues. Additionally, extra ENeRAG activities supported the dissemination goals of the project (14 conferences, 13 workshops, and 12 outreach events). in all, the project enhanced the reputation, attractiveness and networking channels of ELTE.
The project has introduced the dynamic system approach for geofluid research in a scientifically based workflow and a guideline for its application. It has helped in supporting the dissemination of grey and green technologies. We reached these results through knowledge transfer to better understand the interaction between unsaturated and saturated zones; in innovative spatial statistical approaches, vulnerability and Managed aquifer recharge (MAR). The ENeRAG passed the knowledge on low enthalpy geothermal power plants and shallow bedrock energy reservoir planning. Capacity building and networking have improved our understanding of hydrothermal fluid flow systems. Actions could help to use conventional and unconventional isotopes in groundwater-related studies. The improvement of the unsaturated zone modelling capacity of ELTE is an expected outcome of the project. The ENeRAG consortium could play an active role in stepping up ELTE in geofluids subject. Therefore, ELTE can contribute to the sustainable management plan of Hungarian resources by strengthening the scientific and technological capacities. The ENeRAG provides a competitive advantage at a national and regional level by developing and matching research and innovation strengths with business needs. On the level of Hungary, the project strengthens aligned cooperation and hands-on experience to improve stakeholder experience, legislation and dissemination. The ENeRAG Twinning exercise contributes to the aligned interpretation and sustainable utilization of geofluids in the EU.
