The FlowShield project has successfully developed a proof of concept
of the information flow tracking technology from the PI’s ERC project.
Thus, we have achieved the primary objective as expected of an ERC PoC
project: to "verify the innovation potential of ideas arising from ERC
funded projects". FlowShield has resulted in an innovative platform
for security testing and secure integration of JavaScript code from
different providers.
FlowShield has enabled technology transfer from research-oriented
ideas and prototypes to practical tools that are suitable for
utilization. Our results open up for ICT companies and open-source
communities to benefit from the tremendous business and other
utilization opportunities created by third-party services, while
providing secure products to their customers.
With automotive and web industries as prime targets, FlowShield
has confirmed the potential of our security solution by investigating
market trends, competitors, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and
business models, while seeking strategic alliances with industrial and
innovation actors.
FlowShield has also identified utilization possibilities in the area
of leveraging information flow tracking for the detection of user
tracking on the web, which is particularly promising in the light of
the recent development in privacy-enhancing legislation, such as the
General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
