Project description
Training to reprocess mining residues
The EU mining industry’s extractive-waste residues represent 29 % of total waste output. Sulfidic copper-zinc, zinc-lead, and copper-zinc-lead tailings are susceptible to acid mine drainage. However, while these tailings also contain valuable metals, there is a lack of specialists in this sector. The EU funded SULTAN project will train 15 early-stage researchers to reprocess tailings and maximise the impact of their research through dissemination and exploitation. The project will develop pioneering methodologies to assess the resource potential of significant tailings families and explore eco-friendly mining chemicals for advanced metal extraction/recovery set-ups. SULTAN will also valorise the clean tailing residues in circular-economy applications and develop an innovative environmental assessment methodology.
