Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

ALLATHERM is a Spanish company dedicated to the development of services and products for thermal management systems for a wide range of applications in the energy, scientific, telecommunication, automotive, aerospace, and defense industries. Over the last two years, ALLATHERM has developed ALTOM, a hermetically sealed closed 2-phase heat transfer loop for electronic components cooling. ALTOM will directly target EV/HEV powertrain manufacturers’ as its clients and directly solve their needs for innovative thermal management at a competitive cost. ALTOM has completed Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 stage of development. The overall aim of the project is to take it to TRL9 and to market launch by 2021.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

In this Feasibility Study, we have analyzed the implementation of ALTOM and for that we have carried out research and analyses concerning various fields: 1) Technical Feasibility Assessment, 2) Commercial Feasibility Assessment and, 4) Financial Feasibility Assessment.
Among the objectives achieved we can highlight: analysis of the latest prototypes feedback, the required future technical improvements and a structured work plan (tasks, timing, resource) to achieve them; a deeper knowledge of the market scope, needs, drivers and challenges and the competitors within it; the potential of our ALTOM, both technical and commercial; the business plan to be followed to reach the market in the next 24 months.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

ALLATHERM has taken the 2-phase spacecraft thermal control concept and brought it to terrestrial vehicles with a modular ground-breaking approach. ALTOM is an efficient (fully passive), standardised, flexible (multiple configurations), cost-effective (>400€saved per vehicle), robust (no moving parts) and non-toxic system that manages thermal control in power electronics for terrestrial applications (electric and hybrid vehicles-EV/HEVs-).
With ALTOM market launch we will contribute to the achievement of 60% emission reduction in transport within the European Union by 2050, targeted in the 2011 Transport White Paper. Moreover, ALTOM boosts Europe´s transition towards a circular economy as it is framed in the “end-of-life vehicles”, “batteries and accumulators” and “waste on electrical and electronic equipment”, encouraging global competitiveness and sustainable economic growth.
