A mango-based food ingredient, for food supplements and functional foods, that helps maintaining a healthy metabolism and an optimal body composition while preventing glucose intolerance

Project description

Plant-based food supplement to support healthy metabolism

Unhealthy diets and insufficient physical activity represent some of the main risk factors for non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, metabolic syndrome and obesity. Swiss company Vital Solutions specialises in developing plant-based food ingredients and food supplements with the goal of improving public health. The company proposes a mango-based ingredient that helps maintain a healthy metabolism. The laboratory results and animal and human studies demonstrated that the supplement improves glucose tolerance and helps support optimal body mass and fat distribution by acting via specific regulatory enzymes. The EU-funded Care300 project aims to complete final tests and validation of the product and develop a successful commercial strategy.

Objective

Sedentary habits, unhealthy food choices and lack of exercise are posing a tremendous health risk for the European population. Our bodies are overwhelmed by the nutrients that we do not burn by exercising. This impairs our energy balance and damages our metabolism. On the long run, an unhealthy metabolism increases the chances to develop obesity and diabetes. Diabetes affects 10% of the European population and obesity 10-30%. Besides the social implications, this problem has financial repercussions. As the symptoms only manifest at late stages of metabolic dysfunctions, when counter measures are not effective anymore, it crucial is to maintain a healthy metabolism.
Vital Solutions Swiss AG is specialized in developing plant-based food ingredients, for functional food and food supplements, aimed at improving human health. We propose Care300, a mango-based ingredient, that keeps our metabolism healthy. By acting on specific regulatory enzymes, Care300 helps to reduce body weight, improves glucose tolerance and helps to develop an optimal body mass and fat distribution. Care300 is an effective and easy-to-use solution that protects from metabolic impairments. We thoroughly studied Care300’s mode of action in our laboratory and we characterized its benefits, in animal and human studies. This and its specific action on body composition are the features that make Care300 unique.
The market of food supplement and functional food ingredients is expected to generate revenue for up to €5.6 billions by 2020. People are increasingly aware the importance of taking care of their bodies. With the commercialization of Care300, we expect to reach a revenue of €8.4 millions, a profit of €6 millions and to create a total of 15 new jobs by the 6th year of commercialization.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
