The most advanced “Do-it-Yourself” paint vending machine in the market

Project description

Custom-made paint made easier

The production of custom-made paint relies on a pre-manufactured base paint to which colourants are added to obtain the desired colour. However, this method uses 12 different pre-manufactured base paints. Consequently, this causes an unnecessary increment of transport and waste losses impacting supply chain costs and the environment. The EU-funded SCS project proposes an innovative solution (Self Colour System) that transforms the entire supply chain of the custom-made paint industry with a fully autonomous money in paint-out vending machine. The solution allows the production of all the varieties of paints from just 3 types of pre-manufactured primary paints instead of 12. This method reduces the paint stock by up to 40 % and the overall production costs by 50 %.

Objective

Currently, custom-made paints are produced by paint dispensers according to the base paint production method. A pre-manufactured base paint is selected based on the qualitative and chromophore properties of the desired paint, to which colorants are added to obtain the final product. However, due to the historical problems to manage one of the paint components (TiO2 slurry), its effect on the whiteness of the final paint and the large variety of paint colours and finishes (satin, gloss, matte), this method does not allow to have a universal base paint and leads to a large stock of pre-manufactured base paints (12 different types), which entails an unnecessary increment of transport and waste losses (due to damage or expiration) which impact in both supply chain costs as environment.

Alfa’s innovative solution is the state-of-the-art Self Color System designed to disrupt the current market and transform the whole supply chain of the custom-made paint industry with a fully autonomous money-in-paint-out vending machine. Its development has entailed to overcome several challenges to simplify the chemistry used to a new Master System, with which all the varieties of paints can be produced from just 3 types of premanufactured Master paints instead of the current 12 from the base paint production method. The result is a cutting-edge alternative which perfectly covers the necessities of the whole supply chain by reducing the paint stock up to 40% (which implicates a dramatically diminution of the environmental and economic costs) and the overall production costs by 50%.

With this project, we aim to sell 1.820 Self Color System in the first 5 years (estimated turnover: € 25 million), with a ROI of 3.7 and hiring 135 new employees.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
