Project description
A next-generation software suite for mobile operators
Look who’s not talking! Texting has become the preferred mode of communication over talking. Texts are convenient and fast, and in some countries, they have replaced voice calls. The EU-funded UNIVO-NG project is preparing for this new reality by increasing telecommunication network capacity. With mobile data surpassing voice traffic on a global basis, the network must grow in order to meet the needs of more subscribers or new bandwidth-consuming services. However, most operators use MS Excel for capacity dimensioning, but this programme is inappropriate due to the Big Data challenge. The project will bring to market an innovative next-generation software suite that assists operators in dimensioning and helps to forecast traffic growth impact based on history observation and machine learning.
Objective
Mobile data surpassed voice on a global basis during December of 2009 and it has grown 18-fold over the past 5 years. Once the traffic in the network grows due to increased number of subscribers or new bandwidth consuming services the network must undergo expansion and operators proceed with capacity upgrades and densification increasing their investments. Reports from PWC and Accenture reveal that 66% of CapEx investment are not needed while 80% of needed investments are not done. This directly impacts on mobile users – perceived data rates are smaller, and the network availability is worse affecting data services. Most of operators have no tools for capacity dimensioning, only MS Excel. However, using Excel is simply inappropriate due to the Big Data challenge and lacking ability to include soft capacity models and multi technology processing. Utilizing our experience gained in mobile sector we at Telcap cracked technical barriers and created UNIVO, an innovative next-generation software suite that assists operators in dimensioning from an end-to-end prospective the capacity of 2G, 3G, 4G mobile telecoms networks. It helps forecast traffic growth impact based on history observation and machine learning to significantly reduce CapEx capacity investments (e.g. at RAN by average 27%) ensuring targets for GoS/QoS/QoE parameters perceived by mobile users are met throughout the entire network. Positive feedback received from 3 early adopters helps us believe we can exploit the market segment of Engineering Planning Tools worth over $914 million p.a. Considering the rapid growth of mobile data volume, within the UNIVO-NG project we aim to evolve its capabilities preparing it for massive presence of IoT devices and scheduled 5G introduction. We are convinced UNIVO-NG matches anticipated needs and expectations of mobile operators – we aim to further investigate it through Ph. 1 project.
