Résumé du contexte et des objectifs généraux du projet

In Europe, about 50% of light goods could be transported by bike instead of cars. And that would be a very great idea, as bike is by far the fastest means of transport on small trips, 100% ecological, without noise, without congestion or parking problems.
Yes, but this is not so simple, because the bike cannot be used when you need to carry heavy things.
That is we why we created K-Ryole, the first painless electric trailer which can carry a load up to 250 kg, securely and without any additional effort. The trailer can be attached in seconds to any bicycle’s seat tube and turn it into a tool for easy transportation of goods. Indeed, bike is the fastest means of transport of small trips, fully ecological, without noise, congestion and parking problems.
Urban last mile logistics is a perfect initial market for K-Ryole. Led by recent explosion of e-commerce (up to 48% growth of delivery volume), and new customers demand for instant delivery services (one-hour, one-day delivery), this segment looking urgently for new solutions to replace cars in urban environment.

The objectives of the work plan designed on the SME Instrument Phase 1 were:
Technological assessment:
- Study of scale-up and industrialisation cost of K-Ryole trailer
- Risk assessment and bottleneck analysis of the industrialisation process. Targets and contingences will be set at correct levels, and risk mitigation strategies created in advance.
IP and FTO issues:
- To ensures continuous technology monitoring regarding new IP in Europe and FTO.
Marketing and financial assessment:
- Worldwide market study of the last mile market and short-distance transporting in urban transport
- Competition analysis and monitoring (technology, size, business model, etc).
- Identification of most suitable European partners for market replicates qualification during the phase 2.
- Economic feasibility and business plan drafting.

The action led to very useful conclusions regarding technical, IP, regulatory and business issues, that could be summarized in 2 main points:
1. There is a real business interest in Europe for K-Ryole product, that need to be deepened thanks to an improvement of the marketing strategy to better explain the positioning of K-Ryole compared to its direct competitors.
2. The international development should be prioritized, country by country, in light of the current regulatory context of each country, in order to first focus in “easy” countries, that is to say where there is no necessary lobbying action before commercializing our products.

Thanks to these positive and encouraging Phase1 Feasibility study results, K-Ryole plans to submit the SME Instrument Phase 2 in 2019.

Progrès au-delà de l’état des connaissances et impact potentiel prévu (y compris l’impact socio-économique et les conséquences sociétales plus larges du projet jusqu’à présent)

K-Ryole plans to sell about 10 000 trailers (0,5% market share) in Europe in 2025, earn €55 million and create 98 new jobs.
The SME Instrument project will allow the company to develop and industrialise an advanced, connected trailer, with payload increased and lower cost to attract new customers and broaden reachable target. K-Ryole will first complete a feasibility study to further analyse risks and costs of scale-up, the European regulatory frameworks and will conduct in-depth analysis of the global last mile market in cities.
The SME Instrument will complement funding necessary to reach commercialisation (~€4m), accelerate international development and permit K-Ryole to become a European and world-wide champion in the urban last mile industry market.
