Project description
Location tag acting like a domain name connects people with places
Domain names are used to make the internet more accessible and are often compared to home addresses. Instead of memorising your home’s GPS coordinates every time your friends want to visit you, they just type your street address into the Google maps on their cell phones. The same goes for visiting a website; instead of memorising an IP address, visitors simply type in the domain name into their browser. The EU-funded WayLink project is developing a similar solution for physical locations: a short, unique address tag linking users with a place. Users insert the tag into the system and the system associates the coordinates with the venue they want to reach.
Objective
Abitat SIT has 20 years of experience on Geographic Information System (GIS) and geo-coding services (geo-coding converts addresses into geographic coordinates to be placed on a map): with a turnover of more than 2 million Euro is one of the leader in the Italian market and has created the product Way!Link. GPS devices help them get their way easily and Location Based Sercives (LBS) give them useful information by knowing where they are; nevertheless, tell to these systems to go is not so easy: they need either GPS coordinates or an address, that requires several details. Therefore, this situation is not user friendly and it is time consuming. Furthermore, 1/3 of on-line address is wrong, making sometimes difficult for the users reaching the targeted location. In the past internet had the same problems too: websites had IP coordinates which they turn to be domain name (e.g. 74.125.53.100 = google.com). Way!Link is a similar solution for physical location: a short, unique, address tag links with the users wherever they are, like a domain name for the WWW. Our tag is called GeoLink: the users put it into the system the way they want (they create the GeoLink) and the system associates the coordinates to the venue they want to reach. Our initial business strategy is based on our strong relationship with clients and suppliers: Abitat Sit is closely collaborating with several international company, especially with Autodesk France and AECOM International Development. In addition, we are distributor of one of the biggest Romanian IT company, Syneto, which guaranteed us support for the project. Therefore, our project is highly scalable at worldwide level, also considering the growing importance of the GIS systems and the market trends: through Way!Link we aimed to become partner of major multinational companies (e.g. Google, TomTom, etc.), and we are targeting the 0,01% (1,8 M Euro) of the market by 2023 and the 0,1% by 2030 (18 M Euro).
