Project description
Bringing digital pathology to routine diagnosis
Diagnosis of many diseases relies on slide-based biopsies. However, in many countries this requires shipment of slides to hospitals with expert pathologists, causing significant delays in diagnosis. To address this challenge, the EU-funded SCOPIO project has developed a disruptive computational method that facilitates the digitisation of whole slide images taken with cost-effective conventional hardware. The SCOPIO software overcomes the high cost of digital microscopy by allowing magnification of biopsies up to 100 times. Importantly, it supports the electronic transfer of digital images nationwide to improve pathology workflow and deliver fast diagnosis for many diseases.
Objective
Scopio Labs aims to expand the use of Whole Slide Imaging (WSI) for its application in digital pathology and is developing a digital microscopy platform capable of scanning high resolution images with low hardware costs.
Despite digital microscopy exists for decades, its use has been limited by the high prices of the technology. Our solution provides a low cost-high quality technology which will allow the implementation of WSI facilities in small hospitals and diagnostic centres. By using cutting edge principles of computational photography, we are able to enhance resolution and magnification (up to 100X) of images taken by affordable optics and mechanics through a disruptive computation method.
Biopsies are frequently used to determine different diseases as psoriasis, diabetes, hepatic diseases, infections or cancer. Every year, more than 3 million new cancers are diagnosed and cancer is causing around 1.7 million deaths worldwide. Its early diagnosis has been pointed out as a factor for increasing patient survival. Our technology upgrades the diagnosis process with substantial time savings and connects and assists pathologists and experts worldwide with its analysis software.
We estimate the total addressable market for WSI, including the sale of hardware, software and services enabled by the digitization of glass slides, to grow from $1.3B/year to $11B/year in the next decade.
We forecast that during the next five years after commercialization, we will have sold about 3,150 digital microscopes and hired 38 new employees. We will earn almost €58M profit with a ROI of 6.47. Payback will be reached already in 2021.
