Project description
Turning food starch waste into superabsorbent and biodegradable polymers for diapers
Disposable diapers were a revolution for parents and babies alike, keeping babies drier and eliminating all the laundry and ironing, not to mention pinning and leaks associated with cloth ones. However, despite the fact that today’s diapers include some recyclable materials, there is no easy way to recycle them because they are contaminated with human waste. The Dutch SME Rodenburg Productie has developed a solution; a superabsorbent polymer utilising starch side streams from the food industry that will support fully biodegradable diapers. The EU-funded SAPTOS project is helping the team explore the market in a feasibility study that will include business cases, potential customers and the required specifications for them.
Objective
The proposed work in this SuperAbsorbent Polymers Through Oxidized Starch [SAPTOS] initiative is aimed at the scale-up of Rodenburg’s novel SAP platform towards fully biodegradable disposable diapers, build on cheap starch side streams and a low cost continuous reactor process. Such platform will be a breakthrough in solving a major global waste problem. Specific objectives in this feasibility study are: - Explore promising business cases for our bio-degradable starch based polymer platforms (i.e. DiAldehyde Starch and Solanyl stretch films) with potential customers in diaper industries, evaluating required specifications for polymer derivates, and required characteristics of SAP-based applications. - Elaborate on a detailed business plan (D1).
