Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

Between 2000 and 2050, the global number of people over 60 is expected to rise from 600m in 2000 to 2b in 2050 . The world’s aging populations have placed increasing strain on the provision of long-term care (LTC), with many elderly people having no access to LTC or must part with significant financial burden to attain this personalised care . This is due to critical gaps in the availability of LTC workers and infrastructure which can only cover 47% of current demand . The rest of the elderly without LTC support are dependent on care assistance, generally from unpaid female relatives who must work around their own daily working schedules. All countries face major challenges to ensure that their health and social systems are ready to deal with this demographic shift. Since it is not possible to double the number of nursing homes over the next decade, as needed, actions must be taken to improve the efficiency of the operation of Nursing Homes.

We have developed Perlis Eldercare, an AI powered Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) system that will monitor the Activities of Daily Living (ADL) of the elderly to identify development of Frail Elderly Situations. Our system serves as a very-early warning to physicians (and other professional caregivers) and it provides continuous 24/7 active medical supervision at the homes of the independent elderly.

The oevrall objective of the project include final product development & testing of the system.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

Definition of minimum viable product, definition of remaining software development tasks, design of the pilot trials, analysis of the regulatory framework affecting system commercialisation, in-depth market analysis, definition of go-to-market strategy, verification of business model and establishment of effective IP strategy.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

Perlis has carried out a case study that shows how Perlis ElderCare outstands in detecting and preventing frail elderly situations. Daily activities of a supposedly healthy 86 years old woman were monitored using Perlis ElderCare system. The system recorded unusually agitated movements only when the subject was alone, a typical aptitude of Alzheimer disease (trying to hide symptoms from the beloved ones). She was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment and since treated to enable her best possible independent living, under a more restricted supervised observation unit.
