Project description
Large-scale production of plastic reinforced with basalt fibres for automotive parts
Germany-based company AFEX GmbH is a leading manufacturer of high-grade components from various plastic materials, sold in more than 27 countries in America, Asia and Europe. Over the last few years, the company has developed an advanced fibre-reinforced polymer, using basalt as a fibre. The new plastic offers superior properties compared to common plastics used in automotive parts, medical equipment and consumer goods. With the help of the EU-funded COBAS project, AFEX aims to scale the production of a plastic material reinforced with chopped basalt fibres to make it part of the regular production of automotive parts.
Objective
Our company, AFEX GmbH, (http://www.afex-kunststoff.de(opens in new window)) was established in 1998 as a innovative daughter company of
the technical centre of A-FORM AG (leading manufacturer of moulds and developer of technologies for plastic forming, see
video presentation: http://media.kabeljournal.de/www.a-form.de/a-form.mp4(opens in new window)). AFEX is a leading German manufacturer of
high-grade components from various plastic materials (PA, ABS, PC, PPS, PPV, PEEK) for the professional automotive
(VW, BMW, Audi, Bentley and others), medical, consumer goods industries with a headcount of 22 persons and an annual
revenue of 2.66 million €. Our goal is to recognize industry needs and develop performance-rich innovative products of the
highest quality. Our products are available in more than 27 countries in Europe, America, India and Asia through our
marketing and sales department and global network of customers and partners. We also find it important to present our
latest technologies and products at the finest exhibitions and conventions worldwide. For 19 years our company has been
involved in the manufacturing of complex plastic components using highly diverse materials. In 2013-2017 we developed -
from a national fund and our own resource - an advanced plastic material based on basalt fiber fillers (uncoated) allowing
significant improvement of plastic products properties and also demonstrated this material and fabrication method for some
customers from automotive industry as well as further industries. With the help of the SME instrument funding we wish to
further develop our high-potential innovative technology allowing the series production of these highly innovative polyamide
(PA) plastic parts reinforced with chopped basalt (PABF) fibers and widely sell them to automotive industry. If the feasibility
assessment will have positive result we will continue the project. The EC investment will have its return in 2-3 years after the
market entry.
