Tackling the environmental concerns for deploying geothermal energy in Europe

Resultado final

general protocol on simplified models

Development of a protocol for the generation of simplified LCA models to assess environmental impacts of geothermal installations, accompanying the simplified parametrized model

Monitoring report

EGEC will be in charge of monitoring the performance indicators. The consortium will evaluate and monitor the impact of the project through several indicators and milestones.

Report on Environmental concerns

report on the overall state of the art of deep geothermal environmental data, with environmental quantitative and qualitative data and adopted solutions to limit impacts and risks of deep geothermal energy in Europe

simplified parameterized model

Generation of simplified parameterized model for a selection of GEOENVI case studies, to simplify comprehensive life cycle assessment models into reduced models that allow estimations of life cycle impacts based on a very low number of input parameters.

environmental impact and LCA guidelines

First version of harmonized guidelines to perform environmental assessment for geothermal systems based on LCA and non LCA impact indicators

Communication plan

plan for ‘dissemination and exploitation’ of project results with a coordinated communication and dissemination strategy, with key actors in markets beyond the six key countries identified.

Report on perception of environmental concerns and strategies/recommendations to deal with biased perception

Broaden the state of the art to other RES that may generate a similar kind of impact, to better understand and weight environmental concerns on deep geothermal energy

environmental assessment studies

Panorama of available environmental assessment studies and sustainability assessment studies for geothermal systems in Europe.

market actors mapping

Reports on European geothermal market actors mapping and on GEOENVI engagement strategies: training, workshop, data collaboration, capacity building, etc.

Training seminar

Report on training seminar (using training materials of deliverable 5.2) organised for committed stakeholders, in month 21, in order to explain and make available the adoption of the GEOENVI guidelines to stakeholders.

Decision-making process mapping

Mapping and ranking of energy-related policy and environmental regulations, including the Decision-making process, influencing geothermal and RES

Feedback report

Feedback report at the end of the test period reporting comments from stakeholders and the decision makers about GEONVI tools, with commitment letters from market stakeholders on GEOENVI tools adoption.

harmonized guidelines

Report and feedback on the use of the harmonized guidelines and the protocol for generating simplified parameterized models with the stakeholders from GEOENVI workshops

Policy events

Reports on the policy events with a strategy for engagement of geothermal stakeholders and policy-makers, promoting adopted recommendations to facilitate the implementation of the regulatory harmonization.

Environmental assessment of GEOENVI cases studies

Environmental assessment in each country, for a selection of GEOENVI cases studies following the harmonized LCA guidelines

Report on mitigation measures

Report on adopted solutions and recommendations to circumvent environmental concerns, analysing mitigation measurements (e.g. abatement systems, operational procedures, monitoring alert) adopted in geothermal plants in operation

Recommendations for European harmonization

Drafting recommendations for policy measures to harmonize or have mutual recognition of environmental regulations at the European level and for defining common environmental criteria of financial institutions investing in geothermal

GEOENVI conferences

Report on the conferences to promote GEOENVI results: The audience will gather the GEOENVI consortium and the target groups. The objective is to present the main project results and to discuss them with key stakeholders. Three one-day conferences will be held for around one-hundred people.

brochures

a 4 pages summary of the conclusions from WPs 2,3, and 4; with a description of the available uses and technologies to mitigate environmental concerns and presenting main benefits of geothermal focusing on the best practice applications. These brochures will be translated in the languages of the target countries.

mechanisms to promote simplified models

Video training, brochures and training guidelines and incentive mechanisms to promote simplified models to market stakeholders (in national languages)

updated protocol

updated protocol, produced in WP3, with feedbacks from market actors, to deliver simplified LCA models to assess environmental impacts of geothermal installations

website

project website includes news, reports results and best practice, allows information exchange between partners, and contains a library of useful information for partners and the public.

Media content

A Media campaign using newsletters, press releases, video clip, press pack... with a focus on disseminating project's outputs at the EU and national levels, promoting the benefits of geothermal

recommendations on environmental regulations

Compilation of recommendations for environmental regulations at the European level and at national level, with exchange of the best practices on environmental regulations between environmental and regulatory institutions.

web-based platform for stakeholders

Establish a web-based platform (in national language) inserted in the project’s website, where stakeholders can upload and validate their simplified model LCA implementation results.

Database on environmental matters

Reporting and organizing environmental data in a database which includes a list of recent incidents and problems caused by the installation or the operation of a deep geothermal plant ; and an inventory of seismic events linked with geothermal.
