Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

The conformity of constructive elements and technological modules applied in Upper Kama architectural sites highlights a critical analysis not limited to the pilot area, but visible in the architectural heritage of all European Cultural Routes. The classification of Cultural Heritage Routes (ICOMOS 16th General Assembly “Charter on Cultural Routes”), encouraged in recent years towards management and enhancement programs across political boundaries, leads to the identification of wide cultural basins: Spanish pilgrimage routes, Moorish architecture in Andalusia, the industrial archaeology of Rhine valley, the network of Charterhouses between France and Italy are only some possible examples of architectural basins interested by unique cultural and historical phenomena extended at the territorial scale. The necessary unified management highlights, as methodological input, the recognition of features and values of connection between physically distant but culturally joint sites, supported by “tangible elements that bear witness to their cultural heritage and provide a physical confirmation of their existence”. Thus, geographical boundaries help to shape Cultural Heritage Routes, determining their path or their development over time, but they cannot limit their cultural phenomenon, which has been assimilated in the methodology of analysis and synthesis to other typological contexts.

On a scientific level, PROMETHEUS will develop an information/cognitive three-dimensional system, multidisciplinary and implementable, which will represent the preparatory step for the management (restoration, conservation and maintenance) of existent Cultural/Architectural Heritage Routes. The system, in order to be widely applicable, has to be fast, low cost, easy to use and to replicate; this will be obtained thanks to the massive use of no-expensive technological instruments (as photographic cameras) for implementable survey operations, certified and diffused 3D modelling platforms. Through this system, potential market opportunities will arise for the non-academic participants (in relation to the development and application of operating protocols for building modelling and interventions methods), and they will significantly benefit European society/culture. Furthermore, the action will lead to advances in the current knowledge of Upper Kama architectural heritage, and to the development of a programmatic “Charta” of Documentation-for-Intervention applicable on European Cultural Heritage Routes.
Thanks to the transfer of knowledge among the disciplines involved, PROMETHEUS will pursue the following specific objectives of strengthening researchers’ and professionals’ skills with activities aimed at developing real and remote interdisciplinary actions and tools, for a common language and methodology necessary to implement Collaborative Models Management Systems.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

PROMETHEUS research activities are implemented through the following logical steps:

YEAR 1 Phase 1: Site survey and classification of methods and protocols of analysis
- Identification of the pilot case study and definition of boundaries and sites.
- Realisation of illustrated atlas on local architectural heritage, integrated with archive research.
- Metric survey and creation of measurements databases, technological inventories of building units, with thermography instruments, diagnosis devices and analysis of constructive elements, data storage and management and elaboration of info-graphic protocols of pilot buildings, at different scales of representation.
- Integration and Transfer of Knowledge between researchers, to define languages and synthesis tools of analysis for the developing of strategies and realizations of 3D archives.

YEAR 2 Phase 2: Population of digital Libraries for Informative Models
- Definition of descriptors about architectural features and creation of digital cards for database management.
- Creation of systems of analysis for damages and conservation conditions of buildings.
- Building of 3D models of Cultural Heritage Routes’ monuments.
- Database operations and validations extended across buildings, identified as most significant in terms of typological and formal characteristics; interaction between databases for the development of interventions management systems (conservation, musealization, valorisation, etc.) and creation of thematic maps.
- Consolidation of a common language in a practical tool for intervention programs and facilitation systems, to control quality of interventions, with conscious consideration of professional provisions.

YEAR 3 Phase 3: Implementation of Collaborative Modelling Protocols
- Optimization of models of architectural sites, developed in terms of extension, completeness and data content.
- Creation of databases to facilitate the use of digital databases and Informative Models for the valorisation of architectural heritage. Models will be related to local planning and management tools to create thematic maps, clarifying the link between conservation, management, territorial planning and preservation of sites.
- Definition of operating protocols targeted to public institutions, administrations and private stakeholders in charge of planning and management and of conservation/valorisation interventions on Built Heritage.
- Communication / dissemination to target stakeholders, with integration of research-enterprise-client process for operative interventions on Built Heritage.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

In recent years, technologies for digital surveys have introduced considerations on numerical modelling. Research coordinated at Laboratoire CRAI MAP - ENSA Nancy (A. Fuchs, 2006), or studies conducted at RADAAR, La Sapienza Roma (R. Migliari,2009; M. Docci,2007) have promoted a definition of formal/stylistic frameworks of representative processes to represent complex cultural contexts (A. Ferjaoui, M.L. Germanà 2014; P. Bryan, B. Blake, J. Bedford, 2012). Integration and interaction of data is persecuted (GRAVITATE Project 2015, IT Innovation Center, UK), also extendable from the archaeological scale (ARIADNE Project 2013-2017, University of Florence, IT). It emerges the objective of representation of architectural irregularities and the semantic analysis of building elements for which digital technologies have to be integrated (DM Jones, 2011; S. Parrinello, 2016).
Due to their recent acknowledgement (e.g. the Hansa 1991, Andalusian architecture 1997, Rhine Valley 2002, Pyrenean route 2003, Cluniac Sites 2005, Transromanica 2007, Cistercian abbeys 2010, Thermal Towns 2010, Charles V fortresses 2015, fortified towns of the Grande Region 2016) CHRs are poorly documented in historical and physical conditions, architectural value and operative programs of intervention and territorial management. Actual projects supporting CHRs valorisation mostly focus on a touristic, educational and training approach (HECTOR and CERTESS projects, by European Institute of Cultural Routes) demonstrating the lack of a unique and simple protocol for territorial management of CHRs sites and basins.
