Cyanotoxins in Irrigation Waters: Surveillance, Risk Assessment, and Innovative Remediation proposals

Project description

New methods to detect toxicity of cyanotoxins in water

Eutrophication is a complex process which occurs in fresh and marine waters and where excessive development of certain types of algae disturbs the aquatic ecosystems and becomes a threat to animal and human health. Human activities and climatic change are the most important drivers of eutrophication. Evidence of eutrophication is found in many regions, from the Baltic to the Black Sea. The EU-funded TOXICROP project will take a multidisciplinary approach and consolidate transnational collaborations to deliver guidelines for water management and treatment. Specifically, it will organise research and innovation staff exchanges to map agricultural risk areas of cyanotoxin occurrence and develop environment-friendly, low-cost techniques for water treatment and methods to detect and assess toxicity of cyanotoxins.
