Zero Defect Manufacturing Platform

Periodic Reporting for period 3 - ZDMP (Zero Defect Manufacturing Platform)

Reporting period: 2021-07-01 to 2023-06-30

ZDMP – Zero Defects Manufacturing Platform (www.zdmp.eu) January 2019 until June , engaged 31partners (Users, Technology Providers, Consultants and Research Institutes) from 11 countries with a total budget of circa 16.2M€. In addition 28 subcall projects were engaged. The goal of ZDMP was to develop and establish a digital platform for connected smart factories, so achieving excellence in manufacturing through zero-defect processes and products. The modular platform will support factories with a high interoperability level, to cope with the concept of connected factories to reach the goal of zero-defect production. ZDMP allows end-users to connect their systems (eg shop-floor and Enterprise Resource Planning systems) to benefit from the features of the platform.
ZDMP is a suite of components:
• To build applications that monitor, manage, and control connected devices
• To collect and analyse data from connected devices including use of AI
• To enable secure connectivity and privacy between devices and throughout the platform
• To manage interconnectivity from device/sensors, to machines, to factories, to partners
• To offer core API services to facilitate use
• To allow integration with 3rd party systems/services and provide interoperability with other platforms
• To automate and provide services for the intelligent zero-defects ecosystem of the platform

Key societal impacts:
- Since manufacturing defects are a significant issue for industry, one of the main objectives for the digitization of manufacturing is the achievement of a zero-defect scenario.
- Creation of a whole ecosystem around the platform, engaging additional stakeholders )eg subcall partners), establishing links with existing initiatives and finding synergies with them, and attracting end users.
- The ZDMP Platform will provide companies in the manufacturing sector a set of advanced and non-existing services aimed to attain a zero-defect scenario in their processes.

Project primary objectives?
O3 To ensure that the project results will be effectively exploited in the market
O4 To provide ZDMPs architecture, specification suite, mock-ups, and standardisation approach
O5 To deliver the core Industrial IoT/ Network support of data acquisition, interoperability, and AI/analytics supported by orchestration, monitoring, and autonomous computing
O6 To provide the user/developer a runtime platform including environment, marketplace, 1st/3rd party service framework, developers engagement framework, and internal integration support
O7 To ensure outstanding process quality, through equipment, resource, and energy efficiency, by deploying novel AI based solutions
O8 To ensure the quality of the product along the value chain of the manufacturing process by deploying advanced modelling, detection, inspection, and predictive techniques
O9 To act as the experimental base for the ZDMP Platform targeting Traditional Sector specific use cases: Automotive & Machine Tools
O10 To act as the experimental base for the ZDMP Platform targeting Extended Sector specific use cases: Construction & Electronics
O11 To provide cross domain validation of ZDMP which will assert the development of the project solution and validate ZDMP outcomes
O12 To develop the ZDMP ecosystem for fostering manufacturing excellence through cascade funding to support SMEs in piloting/developing prototype applications
The key work was as follows:
• Management: Procedures, Metrics, Coordination and Reporting (WP1): Period and overall KPIs in have largely been achieved, exceeded, or have minor discrepancies. Tasks have broadly started and finished on time. over 152 deliverables have been completed in total including document and software.
• Business Challenge: Vision, Market, Use Cases, and Interlinking (WP2): This is the primary operational WP that kicked-off the project in 2019-01, with presence of all partners, the European Commission, and the EFPF and Qu4lity sister projects. The aim was to set clustering opportunities and the cohesion of the project: the goal, and the overall vision.
• Business Approach: Market, Exploitation, and Sustainability (WP3): This activity has addressed the methodological approach to the future exploitation of the projects and its components, namely Market Analysis, Competition, and Business Opportunity Analysis including value propositions and multiple business-model canvases, Business Models / Cases, as well as partners individual and joint exploitation plans. In terms of joint exploitation, one of the primary exploitation routers of the project has been to set up a joint exploitation company named i4FS (Industry 4 Factory Solutions) of which 5 ZDMP SME technology partners (and 2 external ones) are the current shareholders and which joined as a beneficiary to the project at the end of 2020. Regular exploitation update has continued by all partners including those related to the value proposition, individual/joint exploitation and the IPR parameters for the project zAssets
• Technical Challenge: Requirements, Specifications, and Standardization (WP4): This work accomplished atM18 a first scene-setting about the technical aspects that the project could be shaped with, at the end of the project this information has been revised to reflect reality and ensure these technical documents fully align with the deliverables and final technical plans of the project and be useful to the project exploiters
• Technical work on components related to the following continued and moved on from initial functionality, to integration and interoperation, as well as inclusion on the ZDMP online Marketplace/platform:
• ZDMP Core Services and Middleware (WP5)
• ZDMP Platform Building (WP6)
• ZDMP: Process Quality Assurance (WP7)
• ZDMP: Product Quality Assurance (WP8)
• ZDMP Traditional Sector Cases: Automotive & Machine Tools (WP9) and ZDMP Extended Sector Cases: Construction & Electronics (WP10): Work delivered use case definitions, KPIs, infrastructure establishment for the pilots, application development, deployment, and validation
• ZDMP Experimentation Facility, Cross Domain Demonstrator, and Reference Implementation (WP11): These have been created and validated including the use by multiple subcall projects
• ZDMP Ecosystem Outreach and Cascading Call Management (WP12): 28 Cascading project were sponsored covering around 35 additional parties developing new ZDMP orientated assets, integrating them, and also providing validation
• Impact (WP13): The main activities have been to communicate through different channels mainly about open calls, zAssets, clustering and scientific activities with a fully open approach and the publishing of multiple papers. A major workshop was organised by ZDMP to help facilitate this - DMIS - Digital Manufacturing Industrial Summit, supported by a further 13 projects and with around 250 unique participants.
The following concepts are the most challenging and are key to achieve ZDMPs mission.
• Zero-defect Manufacturing (ZDM): ZDMP Innovation/SOTA Enhancement
• Quality Inspection Technologies: ZDMP Innovation/SOTA Enhancement: Production
• Quality Inspection Analytics: ZDMP Innovation/SOTA Enhancement
• Manufacturing Process Optimisation: ZDMP Innovation/SOTA Enhancement
• Self-Learning Systems: ZDMP Innovation/SOTA Enhancement
• Big Data and Semantic Interoperability: ZDMP Innovation/SOTA Enhancement
• Industrial IoT (IIoT) and Edge Computing: ZDMP Innovation/SOTA Enhancement
