Periodic Reporting for period 1 - HECTOR (Τhe New Generation of Distributed Fiber Optic Sensors for Critical Infrastructures)

ARAGON PHOTONICS S.L.U. is a Spanish Company dedicated to the development of advanced test and measurement solutions in photonics and optical communication, with specialization in optical fibers, for sectors as telecommunications, transport and security. Since 2016 we have been developing HECTOR, a disruptive Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) system able to extend the sensing range over 150km with 3m location accuracy. ARAGON PHOTONICS will directly target clients connected with infrastructure maintenance and concessions seeking for security options (i.e. avoid cooper robbery from Power Transmission installations) solution and indirectly through integrators seeking for more precise solutions to adapt and integrate them in their large projects (i.e. Oil & Gas pipes monitoring). HECTOR has completed Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 stage of development. The overall aim of the project is to take it to TRL9 and to market launch by 2021.
In this Feasibility Study, we have analyzed the implementation of HECTOR. We have carried out research and analyses concerning various fields: 1) technical plan, 2) FTO analysis, 3) Commercial analysis, 4) Financial feasibility.
Among the objectives achieved we can highlight: analysis of the current state of development of our HECTOR and the required future improvements, a deeper knowledge of the market needs and the competitors within it; the potential of our HECTOR, both technical and commercial; the business plan to be followed to reach the market in the next 24 months.

HECTOR is the only DAS solution that goes beyond the state-of-the-art and it integrates in a single product three layers (HDAS, LDAS, Raman extension) thanks to which the following features are achieved: 1) robust; 2) smart (software with predictive and adaptive threshold algorithm); 3) accurate (the longest sensing range ->150km- with 3m location accuracy); 4) adaptable (can be integrated with any type of control software); 5) enabling (can use existing installed fibers as monitoring tool); 6) cost-effective (1/3 of existing solutions).
HECTOR will directly imply reducing economic losses to problems associated with inefficient maintenance as well as security issues of infrastructure. This is fully associated with the smart city concept as HECTOR will contribute to the infrastructure of cities (i.e. transport, water distribution, power transmission) to be much more efficient and sustainable by monitoring them.
