Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

Battery performance in today’s age of technology is too weak to keep up with the high demand of energy needed to power computers and smart devices. The average smart phone battery capacity lasts on average approximately 10 hours. Battery capacity improvements have been marginal (5% per year), with the main improvements being in phone and processor efficiency, thus reducing power consumption. Today, rechargeable batteries aren’t safe for the environment, containing hazardous materials and chemicals such as Lithium, Nickel, Cadmium and Lead, as well as concentrated acids and poisonous organic solvents. Despite batteries being classified as safe to dispose in the normal municipal waste bins, they are a still a danger to water supply systems as they contain metals. Longer battery life spans reduces the amount of expensive metals that would be wasted if thrown away. During the phase 2 innovation project, Pntlloxx will focus on revising the specifications of existing Capacitoxx-100 unit. Perform subcomponent upgrades to the Capacitoxx-100 in order to miniaturize the device. Then they will upgrade manufacturing process in order to accommodate the changes to the capacitor. Pntlloxx will validate the technology with a battery manufacturer and through an end user trial to compare the performance Capacitoxx-100 integrated units vs existing smartphone battery performance.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

Pntlloxx undertook a full analysis of both the technical and business potential of the Capacitoxx-100 concluding that it would be highly valuable for the commercial industry. Pntlloxx reviewed the results achieved with their initial testing in conjunction with Samsung S7 and S4 batteries to identify needed improvements to be made during the Phase 2 project. Specifically, they defined the necessary upgrades to the subcomponents and manufacturing process necessary for maximum production efficiency and long term battery durability and performance. The company used the feasibility study to scout multiple business models as well as scout suppliers and potential companies to participate in the assembly and in field demonstration of the Capacitoxx-100.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

The expected outcome of the project is to successfully execute the market validation and demonstrate that the value of highly efficient hybrid battery cell for smart phone and smart device battery improvement and performance optimization. The easy to integrate manufacturing process, wide range of working temperature of the cell, and extremely high charge density will enable scalable and simplistic production for any type of battery and smartphone combination. The Capacitoxx-100 development will boost economic growth and create jobs within Pntlloxx.
