FIbre OrientatioN Analysis of fibre-reinforced components

Fibre-reinforced material parts (e.g. glass/carbon-reinforced plastics, FRP) have recently emerged as a mechanically viable, cheaper and cleaner alternative to load-bearing metal parts – becoming a multi-billion market expected to be worth over $135bn by 2021. Their mechanical strength depends on the local fibre orientation, which needs to be aligned with the main loading directions.

The overall aim of the Phase 1 project was to position Xnovo for high growth by overcoming barriers and challenges associated with the introduction of an x-ray module for structural 3D imaging of FRP on the FRP-related market segments.

The specific objectives included: (1) Market study focusing on a detailed characterization of the potential of the envisioned solution, including a comprehensive market analysis of the primary segments; (2) Development of a viable business plan based on a verified business model; (4) Optimize IPR strategy around the FibreScanner3D core technology and ensure Freedom-to-Operate; (5) Plan the Phase 2 project, including engagement with end-users and strategic partners.

An analysis of the relevant markets for the FibreScanner3D was conducted, with a detailed characterization of the priority segments for commercial exploitation of our technology. Additionally, an evaluation of potential competitors, partnerships, customers and end-users was performed, and initial contacts have been carried with some stakeholders in order to establish an understanding of market sensitivities pertaining to price point. The overview on the existing IP landscape was updated in collaboration with IPR attorneys and a solid backup on Xnovo’s claims on our freedom-to-operate was secured. We have also concluded that the overall vision of positioning Xnovo as innovation leading company in 3D imaging tools is soundly supported by the competitive edge that FibreScanner3D technology entails. In sum, the technological concepts, approach and expected impact was validated favourably through the feasibility study and remains unchanged for the innovation project to be carried out.

FibreScanner3D end-users will seamlessly and non-destructively access the fibre structural information of their FRP products, potentially untapping savings from the reduction on the development costs for new FRP parts. The successful implementation of the present project will represent a significant business opportunity for Xnovo, ultimately leading to a >100% growth from our company current size.
