Project description
Carbon fibre wheel prototypes
Resin transfer moulding is a low-pressure moulding process, where a mixed resin and a catalyst are injected into a closed mould containing a fibre pack or preform. The EU-funded project WELTMAP is utilising the process to develop a lightweight carbon-fibre wheel for aircrafts. Project activities include development of the resin transfer moulding machine, collection of lifecycle inventory data, selection of the fibre lay-up process, and manufacturing and testing of the composite wheel prototype. The end result will be a composite wheel that is significantly lighter than state-of-the-art aluminium wheels.
Objective
The main objective of WELMAP project is the development and evaluation of a manufacturing process for the composite wheel via low-pressure RTM (LP-RTM). The project involves tasks such as manufacturing related advice during the design process of the wheel, development of a manufacturin gprocess, collection of life cycle inventory data of the process, evaluation of fibre lay-up and manufacturing and testing of wheel prototypes.
