CORDIS - EU research results
CORDIS

An automated, machine learning, IoT agronomic platform for optimal irrigation, pesticide and fertilizer utilization at farms.

Project description

A platform for better management of crop needs

With demand for food growing, the agricultural industry is under increasing pressure to deliver and to cope with climate change. As such, solutions are needed that will ensure output and reduce water waste and emissions. In this context, the EU-funded Revotree project will conduct a technical and business feasibility study of an irrigation platform based on AI. This new platform is expected to help farmers monitor their crops and the amount of water, pesticides and fertiliser they need while controlling many of these processes efficiently and economically. In turn, this will result in reduced water usage of up to 50 %. Finally, it would also provide data to research centres, agronomists and others.

Objective

Revotree is an agronomic Internet of Things (IoT) automated intelligent irrigation platform that lets farmers know crops’ real needs, able to take autonomous decisions via its algorithms to control the opening and closure of the water flow, and simultaneously indicates the correct usage of pesticides and fertilizers without any user interaction, thereby improving crops’ productivity and natural resource usage. Revotree allows farmers to improve their business, saving up to 50% water (€ 2000/year per hectare) and improving the crop productivity by 20%. At the same time, Revotree allows to collect specific data on local crops and, through smart machine learning algorithms and AI, it can analyze, filter and tailor the data for each of its second level (big data) clients that will be agricultural research centers, agronomists, farm insurances, micro-local weather tracking, crops and farms mapping, pesticide and fertilizer companies.
After the development process started in 2015 and the validation of the technology (9 installations in Italy and Switzerland), Revotree is ready to scale-up the technology thanks to the application in 300 fully operational farms in Southern Mediterranean countries, in order to validate the sensor manufacturing process and benefits for end-users. The market potentials are huge: only considering the already consolidated contacts with potential customers, the Serviceable and Obtainable Market (SOM) in the EU can be estimated to be 30 M€/year by 2024.
During Phase 1 project, Revotree S.r.l. will develop a detailed technical and business feasibility analysis, focused on the supply chain optimization for Revotree’s hardware manufacturing, the prototypal Revotree’s process design, customers validation for subscription fee confirmation (300 €/year for farmer, 5000 €/year for big data customers), the analysis of the achievable market and the refinement of the Business Model to be implemented in the Market entry phase.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.

SME-1 - SME instrument phase 1
