Summary of the context and overall objectives of the project

Industrial production cycles are growing faster, yet the vital design process is still split between the physical 2D pen-and-paper realm and the virtual 3D realm. This split has become a technology gap that is impeding the evolution of design. Virtual Reality is a medium to deliver a professional design tool to sketch in 3D and be fully immersed in the scene, experiencing it at scale.
The Phase 1 Feasibility Study on Gravity Sketch’s real-time, multi-user and multi-platform 3D creation tool concludes that the project is ready for the measures considered for market rollout.

Work performed from the beginning of the project to the end of the period covered by the report and main results achieved so far

Work performed included a technical study to assess the work required to improve data flow to common CAD packages for further compatibility, as well as a plan to improve the efficiency of running calculations. Key areas of work expertise were confirmed.
The market potential study identified Large enterprises, Medium enterprises and Prosumers, with the Automotive sector initially as the main target. The Serviceable Available Market for the proposed product is expected to be between £6-12 billion by 2025. The project is not affected by any regulations except the EU’s GDPR legislation.
Benchmarking shows Gravity Sketch is unique in its offer. Due to its novel approach it has no direct competitors and is working with many software providers to create plug-ins for designers. Our patent attorney confirmed freedom to operate and has helped us prepare a patent strategy. Other IP protection studied include trade secrets, copyrighting and trademarks.
A business plan was developed around a SaaS model with an enterprise and prosumer element via direct sales for B2B customers and online sales for B2C customers. Marketing efforts will primarily target designers across a set of industries that will evolve over time in sync with the sales team. An important part of future strategy will be to better leverage partners / investors and create co-marketing opportunities.

Progress beyond the state of the art and expected potential impact (including the socio-economic impact and the wider societal implications of the project so far)

Gravity Sketch is set to revolutionize the design process in fundamental ways, namely by making VR useful for design content creation, and not just for visualization. This will lead to a shift in the design workflow towards 3D, which is a fundamental step change and will democratize the use of 3D beyond CAD. Last but not least Gravity Sketch provides a fresh approach, using a game engine to make it immersive and intuitive to use, and offers additional features such as lighting, environments and materials in real time from the very first stages of design process.
