Foundations of Advanced 3D Information Visualisation

Objective

The eventual goal of this working group is to provide design-oriented, theoretically sound foundations for the understanding and development of 3D visualisation interfaces for databases and information systems. As the field is only emerging, 3D interfaces to databases and information systems are still scarce and their design and construction is largely ad hoc, lacking general principles as a theoretical base.

The working group will try to improve this situation by studying and identifying the relations existing between interaction in 3D interfaces and database querying and information retrieval as the task domain. Of special interest to the group are: (1) a categorisation of interactive 3D visualisations based on general human factors aspects, their formal properties, and their task orientedness; (2) design guidelines linking 3D presentations with data domains, task types, etc. (3) system architectures that allow the principled construction of 3D interfaces.

ACTIVITIES

The core of the group's activities will be a series of small, semi-open, international workshops. Each of the workshops will involve representatives from all partners. In addition, closely related ESPRIT groups (eg 7040 AMODEUS-II) as well as others active in the field will be invited. Moreover, we will try to invite researchers from other visualisation centers to bring their broader expertise to bear on the problems of information visualisation on the somewhat narrower domain of this working group. Special attention will also be given to include younger researchers in the workshops.

To share the the use of the technology already existing at the sites of the participating institutions, the workshops will be complemented by individual exchange visits by members of the participating institutions. The format of these visits ranges from short one-week to multi-month visits.

POTENTIAL

An elaborated, the design-oriented framework for the construction of 3D interfaces to databases can serve as a sound base for software tools supporting the rapid design and generation of 3D visualisations. There is an opportunity to replace the currently prevailing practice of generating ad hoc solutions by a more principled approach. By generating exemplar 3D visualisations our approach will also enable us to do experimental usability studies with 3D interfaces thereby producing much needed ``real'' data to judge the overall value of 3D interfaces.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
