The ERC AG “Engineering of biomimetic surfaces – Switchable micropatterns for controlled adhesion
and touch” (SWITCH2STICK) developed new micropatterned polymer surfaces with innovative
adhesive functions. In this subsequent PoC Grant, a novel application field for adhesives
microstructures was investigated: the repair of injuries of the human tympanic membrane, affecting
over 30 million patients worldwide each year. To replace conventional surgery, wound management
with a novel gecko-inspired surface structure was successfully demonstrated. Reproducible production
of microstructured PDMS patches was validated and their adhesive properties against tympanic
membranes of mice were positively evaluated. In addition to their reliable adhesion to the intact and
perforated ear drum, easy detachment without causing trauma to the sensitive membrane was
demonstrated. Their functional advantage in substantially improving ear drum defect closure has been
analyzed and validated in a living animal model. The impact on hearing ability has been assessed
using distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs). It was concluded that the patch
successfully helps to restore considerably the sound transmission characteristics of the tympanic
membrane and replaces at least partially the function of the damaged membrane. All animal
experiments were conducted at Saarland University Medical Center in compliance with ethical
principles and applicable EU and national law. To complement the validation, a market search,
industrial survey, IPR strategy and dissemination at a leading trade fair were successfully conducted.
Overall, the project set the basis for medical certification and subsequent clinical studies to prepare a
commercialization in the field of otorhinolaryngology and possibly other medical fields.
