Project description
An improved prediction of future heat waves
Heat waves can have detrimental effects on human health. Climate change projections indicate that heat waves will further increase in frequency and severity over the next decades. However, models remain unable to predict heat waves at lead times of a few weeks – a crucial planning timescale. Early warnings for extreme temperatures would therefore be of high value. The EU-funded project HEATforecast will develop a process-based hierarchy of prediction systems in order to improve the understanding and prediction of heat waves. The project aims to increase the connections between the dynamics and predictability communities to benefit the study of atmospheric fluid dynamics and predictability beyond heat waves.
