The First Energy Saving Shower Tray with Graphene

Project description

Energy-saving shower trays

The worldwide market for shower trays is expected to grow by roughly 5 % over the next 5 years. In Europe alone, the market was worth EUR 600 million in 2018. New regulations from the European Union, meantime, require the use of energy-efficient solutions for hot water supply in buildings. With the Cerian Shower system, up to 40 % of the energy used to warm up water for a shower can be recovered. With the collaboration of Graphenano, graphene will also be included in the product, contributing to an additional 40 % in energy efficiency. The product is due to be tested first in the Netherlands. About 200 new jobs will also be generated as a result of full commercialisation of the Passive Shower EcoTray in Europe alone.

Objective

The smart-home is a growing market due to customers’ demand. Furthermore, new regulations from the EC coming into
force in 2018 and their transposition into national laws, require the use of energy efficient solutions in hot water supply in
buildings, which makes this a key market. The shower-tray market alone, estimated in 29M of trays, gives a European
market of about €600M in 2018, with a CAGR of 10%. The SME Cerian Shower developed and patented a built-in system for
residual heat recovery in shower trays. It consists in a shower tray with a highly efficient heat-exchanger. This facilitates “doit-
yourself” installation for end-users and gives agility and lower costs to both end-users and construction companies. With
Cerian Shower system, up to 40% of the energy used to warm up water for a shower is recovered. With the collaboration of
Graphenano, a SME producing graphene, we will also include graphene in our solution, which we estimate will increase by
another 40% the efficiency in energy use. Following the first prototypes developed by Cerian Shower, the company wants to
pursue certification product certification in The Netherlands, testing in real settings, and developing further agreements with
customers. This will be done during this 5-month SMEInst-1 project. Progressing further in up-scale production via
SMEInst-2, Cerian Shower will reach €56M revenues in 2023, and Graphenano will reach €3M revenues in the same year.
About 200 new jobs will be generated as a result of full commercialisation of Passive Shower EcoTray in Europe alone.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
