Making sure the winds of innovation are blowing strong
Floating wind turbines (FOWTs) represent an innovative energy solution for countries with deep waters as they have lower installation costs and can harness energy in areas with high wind speeds. The SET-Plan strategy suggests that the EU should move rapidly towards the deployment of FOWTs and strengthen the initiative with early-stage researchers (ESRs). The EU-funded STEP4WIND project intends to improve the commercial readiness level of offshore wind energy by adopting innovative technological systems. As a European Industrial Doctorate programme, it will deliver 10 doctoral degrees supervised by three universities and five leading energy companies. The project will also develop specific tools and methods to address the technological and economic challenges of FOWTs.
