Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases Secretariat

Project description

World’s biggest public research funders unite to save lives

Cancer, heart attacks, diabetes and other noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) kill 41 million people each year, equivalent to 71 % of all deaths globally. Known as chronic diseases, they affect people of all age groups, regions and countries. The EU-funded GACD project is supporting research collaboration on chronic diseases through the ‘Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases’. This is a worldwide alliance of 15 health research funders, whose teams form a network of multidisciplinary health-care professionals and researchers. They will reduce the impact of NCDs through a focus on implementation research in low-income and middle-income countries, and vulnerable populations in high-income countries. The GACD will form a research network – a global community across countries, projects and disciplines for NCDs.

Objective

The Global Alliance for Chronic Diseases (GACD) brings together leading health research funding agencies of key countries to coordinate research activities addressing on a global scale the prevention and treatment of chronic, non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, respiratory diseases, cancer and mental health.
The GACD Secretariat supports its member agencies by helping to align research priorities, coordinating joint funding opportunities and maintaining a Research Network which aims to increase the impact of funded research projects.
